MAT Schools
A lot of post graduate schools offer some sort of education credential for students looking to get into teaching. However, not all schools offer a Master of Arts in Teaching, more commonly referred to as MAT within the education field. Here are some of the more respected schools based on our research. Keep in mind, unless you plan to teach at a Ivy league school, choosing a prestigious MAT school may not be necessary. Most students pick schools that are more convenient for them such as schools that are closer and may offer online courses. For a more complete list of schools, check out our

- USC Rossier School of Education - USC's rich history makes their online Masters of Arts in Teaching a very popular choice among those looking to further their career in education.
- UNC Graduate School of Education - Their MAT program is comprised of 39 units course load and is taught by some of the most respected scholars in the country. Students must be full-time and complete the program in a specific sequence. The UNC MAT program is geared towards preparing students to be ready to teach in the following content areas:
- Grades K-12: English as a Second Language, French, German, Japanese, and Spanish
- Grades 9-12: English, Latin, and Social Studies

UC Irvine - California schools have more rigorous MAT programs due to their standards set by the state. The MAT program at UCI is 15 month academic program masters degree coursework combined with actual student teaching requirement at actual schools within Orange County. The following UCI MAT programs are offered:
- Single Subjects Credential for Secondary Teaching
- Multiple Subject Credential for Elementary Teaching
- Intern Teaching Program
Since UC Irvine is a public school, the tuition cost typically is not as high as private schools such as USC. For more info on the cost of the MAT program at UCI visit their website.

Johns Hopkins Master of Arts in Teaching - The Master of Arts in Teaching at Johns Hopkins will prepare candidates for early childhood, elementary, secondary, or English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL). Here are a list of different types of programs available to candidates:
- The School Immersion Master of Arts in Teaching (SIMAT) is a full-time cohort program option that includes a full school-year internship.
- The Professional Immersion Master of Arts in Teaching (ProMAT) – is a partnership program between Johns Hopkins University and Montgomery County Public Schools. This is a 18 month paid partnership full-time program with the Montgomery County Public School district to address teacher shortages in critical needs areas; requires a two year teaching commitment in return.
- The Flexible Master of Arts in Teaching (FlexMAT) – is a part-time program designed for individuals transitioning into teaching; candidates have up to 5 years to complete.
- The Master of Arts in Teaching (AMAT) - provides opportunities for qualified JHU undergraduate students to begin their master's degree and teacher certification after earning 60 undergraduate credits.
